App Store, Marketplace, Play! An Analysis of Multi-Homing in Mobile Software Ecosystems

چکیده
Multi-homing, a strategy where a developer is publishing products for multiple platforms, is studied in this paper using descriptive analysis. The data of over 850,000 applications and their developers were collected from Apple App Store, Google Play, and Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace. The developers publishing for several software ecosystems were then identified. The findings show that multi-homing is utilized by only a small set of developers. In addition, the applications available at several platforms do not seem to differ by the type or the popularity from single-homing applications.

The influence of developer multi-homing on competition between software ecosystems
Having a large number of applications in the marketplace is considered a critical success factor for software ecosystems. The number of applications has been claimed to determine which ecosystems holds the greatest competitive advantage and will eventually dominate the market. This paper investigates the influence of developer multi-homing (i.e., participating in more than one ecosystem) in thr...

This paper examines the effect of the freemium strategy on Google Play, an online marketplace for Android mobile apps. By analyzing a large panel dataset consisting of 1,597 ranked mobile apps, we found that the freemium strategy is positively associated with increased sales volume and revenue of the paid apps. Higher sales rank and review rating of the free version of a mobile app both lead to...
متن کاملAn Examination of the Current Rating System used in Mobile App Stores
Unlike products on Amazon, mobile apps are continuously evolving with new versions of apps in the app store replacing the old versions at a rapid pace. Nevertheless, many app stores still use the Amazon-style rating system for their hosted apps, where every rating assigned to an app over its entire life time is aggregated into one rating that is displayed in the app-store (which we call store-r...
متن کاملChameleon: Multi-Persona Binary Compatibility for Mobile Devices
Mobile devices are vertically integrated systems that are powerful, useful platforms, but unfortunately limit user choice and lock users and developers into a particular mobile ecosystem, such as iOS or Android. We present Chameleon, a multi-persona binary compatibility architecture that allows mobile device users to run applications built for different mobile ecosystems together on the same sm...
متن کاملAn Empirical Analysis of Mobile Apps’ Popularity Metrics in Mobile Software Ecosystems
The growing of mobile platforms in the last years has changed the software development scenario and challenged developers around the world in building successful mobile applications (apps). Users are the core of a mobile software ecosystem (MSECO). Thus, the quality of an app would be related to the user satisfaction, which could be measured by its popularity in App Store. In this paper, we des...
